Every cover manufacturer says 'breathable'. Few explain what it means, why it matters more than almost any other spec, or how a fabric can be waterproof and breathable at the same time. Five minutes here and you'll be able to judge any cover on the market.
What breathability actually is
A breathable fabric lets water vapour — individual water molecules in the air — pass through its structure, while its weave or membrane stops liquid water droplets, which are thousands of times larger. Vapour passes out; rain can't get in. That one-way asymmetry is the whole trick.
On a car, it means the moisture constantly rising from the ground, evaporating off a recently driven car, or condensing during temperature swings can escape through the cover instead of being sealed against your paintwork.
Why it matters more than waterproofing
Paint is damaged slowly by sitting wet: micro-blistering, dulling, and corrosion creeping from stone chips and seams. A car under a non-breathable sheet is wet almost permanently — its own trapped condensation renews every night. A car under a breathable cover dries out within hours of getting damp.
This is why a cheap tarpaulin is worse than nothing, and why every fabric in our range, from the £50 Loki to the flagship Thor, breathes.
How multi-layer fabrics balance the trade-off
More waterproofing usually costs breathability, and vice versa. Multi-layer construction resolves the tension by giving each layer one job: a tough water-shedding outer face, a middle layer for strength and UV stability, and a soft inner face that's kind to paint — with the whole stack still vapour-permeable.
Our Thor uses exactly this construction for year-round outdoor protection, and the winter-storage Gungnir uses a double layer tuned for cold, damp conditions rather than summer UV.
Reading a spec sheet like an expert
When you compare covers anywhere, look for:
- Breathable AND waterproof stated together for outdoor use — either alone is a compromise
- Multi-layer construction, not just a thick single sheet
- A soft inner face — what touches the paint matters most
- UV stability for covers that will live outside
- Tailored fit — breathability can't help a cover that flaps and rubs
