"Waterproof" sounds like it should always be better — until an impermeable cover traps condensation against your paint for a month. Indoor and outdoor covers are engineered for opposite problems, and using the wrong one can do more harm than no cover at all. Here's how to choose in two minutes.
What an outdoor cover has to survive
A car kept outside faces rain, UV, bird droppings, tree sap, frost and wind — and the cover protecting it needs to be waterproof yet breathable, UV-stable so it doesn't degrade in sunlight, and secured well enough that a gale doesn't turn it into a sail. Multi-layer construction matters: the outer layer sheds water while inner layers let the moisture underneath escape.
Fit matters even more outdoors. A universal cover flaps in wind, and every flap drags the fabric across your paint. A tailored pattern hugs the body shape, with mirror pockets keeping everything located.
What an indoor cover is really for
Indoors, the enemies are dust, grit, knocks, sunlight through windows and — in unheated garages — condensation. Waterproofing is irrelevant; breathability is everything. An indoor cover should be soft against paint, dense enough to stop dust, and light enough to fit single-handed.

The condensation trap
The single most common covering mistake: putting a non-breathable 'waterproof' sheet over a car outdoors or in an unheated garage. Water vapour rises from the ground and off the car as temperatures swing, hits the impermeable layer, and condenses — so the car sits wet under its protection, day after day. That's how covers cause the corrosion and micro-blistering they were bought to prevent.
